The top of the trail cairn showed a bare, pale circle where the guiding stone was gone. Hazel stepped nearer and rubbed the smooth scar, then crouched to lift a flat grey slab from the gravel. Its underside felt cool and gritty, and fine dust pricked her palms. She set the slab onto the pale circle, but the weight crushed the softer layer below. The whole stack swayed, then tilted forward until the heavy piece slid off and thudded onto the rut. A gust arrived exactly then, scattering a handful of loose pebbles across her boots and rolling the failed slab farther downhill. Behind her, Greta focused a camera on the broad valley and did not notice the wobble.

Hazel left the wobbling tower alone and walked toward the slope-face outcrop, where rough blocks poked from packed earth. The loosely wedged piece had been weathered on every edge by years of rain and grit. She wiggled it free, brushing off damp grit that clung like carpet threads. Turning it over, she saw a cooler underside with a rust-red trace running across a lighter band. The gravel path had grown warm under the sun, and the stone steamed faint moisture against her fingers. Beside her heel, white mountain anemone blossoms shifted, their thin stalks flexing each time the breeze regained strength. She carried the new stone to a flat boulder and lined it beside two thinner ones, arranging them by thickness. Placed on the edge, the thinnest slab stuck out like a tiny pier above a silent sea of gravel. When a pebble slipped into her boot, she sat in the sheltered gap and tipped out a gritty handful. If the wind pressed again, any tall column would sway for sure, so she listened to its uneven rhythm.

While she compared the flatter pieces, another gust rolled the first grey slab back toward the cairn, stopping against her ankle. She stooped, waited through the remaining rush of air, and felt the stone grow steadier in the lull. Only when the shrubs fell still did she climb the rut, raise the slab, and lower it gently onto the pale circle. The weight settled evenly because she had timed the placement between breaths rather than during the wind. She stepped back, and the five-stone column stayed upright, its edges aligned like careful flooring boards. Warm grit stayed on her fingertips, the tiny grains rasping whenever she curled them.

她正比對各片扁石時，另一陣風把先前那塊灰石推回石堆旁，停在她腳踝邊。她俯身，等最後一股氣流散去，感覺石頭在靜止裡變得穩定。灌木完全靜下時，她才踏回車轍，舉起石片，輕輕放在蒼白圈上。這回因她抓準呼吸間隙，重量平均落下。她退後一步，五層石柱挺立，邊角對齊如細心鋪好的地板。指尖仍沾著溫熱砂粒，當她一彎手指，那細砂便摩擦發聲。
