English Original

Powdery grit coated Darla's thumb as she lifted a plate-like stone from the dry pile two paces above the river. She planned to raise a new tower beside older columns whose silver shadows stretched across the gravel. She set the broad slab on three pebbles, and the base stayed firm despite a cool metallic breeze. Encouraged, she fetched an oval stone and balanced it crosswise, hearing the gentle rattle of gravel beneath her shifting boots. Tiny veins in the slab caught blue-grey light, proof that seasons of water had thinned softer minerals across its surface. The stack, now knee-high, looked solid for the moment, and cool air whispered between the base pebbles.

Wanting height, Darla added a third layer, then a fourth, counting umpteen shape choices as though weight hid inside every curve. She knelt, folding her elbows tight to steady the stack, but each time she tried to breathe deeply the upper stones wobbled. If the breeze grew any stronger along the open water, the tower would bend toward the gravel plain. The third layer had been pressed into place earlier, yet a hairline gap now widened beside its left edge. She slid a wet, flat spacer—still shining from the waterline—between layers, but its slick skin started a slow slide. The more she added, the less the stack could settle; gravel slid under her boots and a faint crack crossed the layer.

A sudden tick rang out when a bird's claws scraped a nearby rock, jolting her hand mid-placement and widening the lean. She spotted the culprit at once: the glossy spacer halfway up reflected cold light like a silver mirror. Darla pinched the spacer's narrow end with two fingers and slowly drew it free from the stack. Weight above dropped a centimetre, and the rougher stones gripped together until every small motion stopped. She stepped back, stretched her shoulders, and a following gust slipped past without shifting a single layer. The shiny slice now lay at her feet on the gravel, glittering with moisture against the matte grey stones. Pale dust ringed the vacated gap, and smudged thumbprints stayed visible along the fresh contact line.

Translation
