Only three ladle-scoops of usable blue paint remained at the bottom of the shared bucket, and sunlight kept drying more. Theo needed at least six scoops to flood the roller tray and reach the sun-lit stripe across his grid square. He had planned to finish that wide sky band before the bell for lunch finally rang. The boundary chalk line between their squares had been hidden by a teal base coat, and amber light pressed above. First, Theo tipped the bucket toward a wire kitchen strainer they had borrowed, catching a shallow wave of sapphire liquid. Loose flakes floated like tiny leaves, and only two neat scoops dripped through before the mesh clogged solid. Theo slid the tray under the wall and watched the paint cover less than half its rigid plastic floor.
Bram, painting the neighboring green hillside, set his brush down and shook the strainer over the tarp. A mild breeze carried warm stone scent mixed with faint plastic notes of the acrylic around their ankles. A brittle skin, shaped almost like a keystone from an arch, dropped out and cracked against the bricks. It left a dark blot on the wall, jutting like a tiny outcrop above Theo’s half-finished sky. The blot surprised them, yet its curve matched the planned horizon, so they decided to keep it as a cloud. Bram fetched a clean stick, pushed it deep, and loosened more liquid paint from beneath the stubborn surface. Three extra scoops slid into the tray, bringing their total to five, still shy of the scratched level mark. At last, a final stir released one more clear ribbon, and the paint rose over the ridge in one smooth wave.
With the tray now full, Theo and Bram swapped places, each rolling a fresh stripe right up to their hidden boundary. The sunny bricks drank the colour fast, leaving a gentle gradient where wet shade met quick-dry light. The blot from the keystone shard softened under a dab of mixed white, turning into a wandering, gregarious cloud shape. A distant laugh floated along the wall, but the two painters kept rolling, their shoulders brushing in quiet rhythm. Soon every gap vanished, and only thin splatters on their forearms showed the work had happened so quickly. Theo raised his tray of sapphire paint, while Bram balanced another beside it; twin surfaces mirrored the sky they had just built.
Translation
