Lily returned just in time to spot the creeping ribbon beside the stove tile. She dragged the mat aside, and her grandmother eased the gas dial lower with care. The overflow thinned, then folded back into the pot, ending the cascade without a splash. Extra thickness remained in the kettle after the quick boil above the rim moments ago. Lily chose narrower jars and pressed each wax disc firmly to compress the smaller surface of air inside. The taste test on a chilled plate offered a delightful surprise for both cooks today. The thicker batch carried bright flashes of lemon that sparkled through the darker fruit with every stir. Finally, she wiped the outside of the first jar and placed it back on the counter. The jar that had felt cool earlier now tipped slightly, a dark ribbon sliding toward its center.
