English Original
A slice of bread protruded halfway from the toaster, its lower edge pale and its unseen top hidden in the slot. Cyrus had spooned cereal into a bowl, and now he reached for a jam jar whose lid stuck with dried sugar. The kettle had been filled earlier, so steam drifted beside his shoulder, drawing silver streaks across the blue-grey window. Morning light angled through the window, giving the toaster a cool shine and sharpening each blue-grey edge. He wrapped a folded napkin around the sticky lid and twisted; the glass turned, yet the release nudged the cereal box. Flakes slid out, scattering like light gravel, and their sweet scent invited a lone fruit fly from somewhere near the sink. The tiny visitor looped before his eyes; its buzzing path broke his calm rhythm entirely. Cyrus jerked backward, and his elbow brushed the ceramic jar that kept the spoons upright.
The jar rocked, handles clattered, and noise leapt across the space toward Lily, who was rooting in the fridge for yoghurt. She straightened at the clank, her shoulder bumping the kettle’s cord; the base rotated just enough to tap the milk jug. Condensation under the jug acted like thin oil, and the glass drifted along the counter’s gentle slope toward the edge. If the jug slid any farther, it would press against the stacked cups and topple them over the rim. An undercurrent of ticking from the wall clock mixed with the hiss of steam. Cyrus dropped the jam jar and shoved the wire napkin holder into the jug’s path. The holder wedged between glass and plates, halting the glide with a sudden low scrape. He glimpsed how every piece on the counter formed a restless ecosystem, not the tidy ceremony his assumption allowed. His fingertips pressed against the wire frame while a final bead of water slid toward the barrier and kept moving.
Translation
