Two cups already sat under the warm lamp, their films tight, while a third cup waited open beside the pearl pot. Drake angled the ladle, aiming to scoop pearls before the tea cooled and the ice watered down. The dark spheres rolled away, but the ladle tip dipped too low and scraped a pale starch layer. Cloudy threads rose, spinning through the amber liquid like smoke around a campfire and tinting the drink dull. He paused, letting the starch settle, yet the timer over the warm bath warned the pearls were losing bounce. His first attempt had been spoiled, and the open cup still lacked its finishing swirl of toppings.
He switched to the slotted spoon, lowering it only halfway, hoping the mid-depth pearls stayed clear of sediment. This time the drag felt smoother, and steam beaded along the spoon’s holes instead of forming milky clouds. If the spoon sank too deep again, a new cloud would swirl up and undo the fresh tea. A gust from the opening door shoved loose order slips across the counter; one slip nudged the waiting cup forward. The rim perched over the mat’s edge, shaking slightly whenever Drake’s elbow brushed the steel shaker behind him. He pivoted, slid the rescued cup farther back, then poured the cleaner pearls in a narrow golden stream. The lever dropped with a momentous clatter, sealing the film while warm air puffed against the knuckles. Yet a tiny swirl of starch still lingered near the bottom, marking progress rather than perfection.
A small sprig of holly had been placed beside the shaker for winter, and its berries caught the lamplight. He glanced at a faded photo near the menu that showed the stall on the street locals called memory lane. The new cup joined the others on the shelf, identical in color yet carrying that faint starch ghost below. A gentle scent of thyme drifted from the syrup pump, hanging in the warm air long after Drake stepped away.
