"Push from here."
Yara steadied the smooth, slightly sticky bottle with both thumbs, then let it swing above the paper. Each pass left a curved violet line that dried almost at once in the warm light. A robin pecked near the tripod base, its claws scraping the gritty soil where an adult—Vivian—anchored stones around the legs while mixing a new green nearby. Wanting thicker colour, Yara tipped in a small dose of extra paint, the liquid cool against her fingernail. The knot at the top grew damp and stretched by a hair, lowering the bottle so it grazed the paper and smeared the freshest stripe. She had already added one extra knot of string for length earlier; now she tied another, proudly believing the longer arc would look grand.
The bottle dropped lower than planned and brushed a line of ants marching along the sheet’s edge. The tiny insects scattered, breaking their neat hierarchy; the sudden movement startled the robin, which leapt upward and flapped hard. Its wingtip clipped the pendulum, knocking it sideways so the swing became a messy ellipse. A faint, scented mist of paint spattered the corner, and green splashes met violet, turning an uncertain brown. Yara hurried to correct the path, yet she added a third adjustment—a quicker push from the side—that only twisted the string more. If she had stopped after the second colour, the arcs would have stayed neat.
During the next pass she noticed the bottle’s cap scraping the paper; the sound was gentle but constant. She paused, slid two fingers under the uppermost added knot, and in one decisive tug pulled that knot free. With the extra loop gone, the bottle rose a thumb-width, clearing the sheet. The swing returned to a slow, meditative rhythm, and paint now dripped in steady dots. The robin settled on the grass, ants regrouped, and Vivian continued stirring behind her. Yara stepped back to admire the clearing pattern, unaware that a single, loosened thread now dangled from the knot and turned in the breeze.
