The paper sheet was bright white, but the bottle's cap already wore speckles of blue. Cleo tipped the pendulum forward; watered paint whispered out, carrying a chalk-damp smell that merged with crushed grass beneath. A warm sunbeam climbed the tripod, slid across her wrist, and brightened a wet fleck on her thumb. Seth, kneeling at the mixing area, whisked orange pigment into water with a wooden stick. Drake, a spaniel with paint-flecked whiskers, sniffed the sour splash zone near the tripod base and sneezed at the vinegar tang. Cleo watched the meniscus inside the swinging bottle shimmer; it curved upward like a tiny glass wall, promising many arcs. She pushed again, and the line widened in graceful loops, the first swings close to flawless execution.
Momentum thinned sooner than she expected, and the pendulum returned toward the center with weaker breath each passing swing. The hole beneath the cap was wider than yesterday, so each pass poured a broader ribbon, and the meniscus sank fast. Drake tracked the dripping trail with quiet paw steps, his nose twitching at the sweet-plastic scent rising from fresh paint. Cleo had planned three colours, yet the blue puddle spread, swallowing space where later rings should land. Her pursuit of a layered spiral shifted; she unhooked the bottle, rinsed it, and filled it halfway with bright orange. The refill took longer than a single swing, leaving a gap on the drying sheet, but she chose to ignore the break. When she rehung the lighter bottle, its path shortened slightly, quietly conserving what little liquid still remained.
The orange line threaded through the earlier blue without touching, growing narrower and drier as the swing slowed. Sunlight warmed the new stripe so quickly that powdery fumes reached the observation point where Cleo and Drake stood side by side. She counted five more arcs before the bottle slowed to a gentle sway and the last drops clung stubbornly to the hole. Drake sat, head tilted, as if weighing the thick smell against the warm afternoon breeze drifting over the grass. The pendulum drifted once more; faint paint dust rose behind it, and green scent rolled out where his tail brushed the grass.
Translation
