A handler chatted quietly with an adult browsing the supply shelf, and the only step-stool stood under their elbows. Quinn took a hesitant breath, then stretched on tiptoe. A faint squeak from a distant wheel marked Quinn’s second try. He wedged his shoes against the metal shelf brace, lifting his heels so they pressed the crossbar. The shelf vibrated with the aquarium motor beneath, and sunshine pouring through the front window glimmered on the cage wires. The added height let him peer past the water-bottle nozzle. He glimpsed evidence of recent exploration—small tunnels winding through pale shavings—but still no animal. Breathing harder, he shifted his weight forward, shoulders brushing tiny silver bells that had once decorated a wedding display; they chimed against each other, delicate yet clear. Quinn balanced, rose another finger’s width, and finally the bedding parted: a brown ear twitched, then an entire hamster surfaced.

The bells’ chime faded just as the hamster blinked, whiskers trembling. A russet nose sniffed the air, perhaps seeking sustenance, yet a sudden glare of sunshine bounced off the glass and flashed across Quinn’s pupils. He blinked, swayed, and a single bell slipped from its hook, pinging against the brace. Startled by the note, the hamster dived, sending a muffled rustle deeper than before. Quinn dropped back to the floor. Esme laughed under her breath; they both knew another visit would be needed. Somewhere above, the bell rocked gently on the brace, leaving a narrow, lingering ring that hovered in the aisle.
