A dull whirr filled the shop whenever the buffing wheel pressed against a leather heel. The bell on the counter answered with a faint ring as the vibration travelled across the narrow surface. Amos stood near the cubbyhole wall; a musty mix of old polish and cork dust drifted around his nose. He tried to reconcile the ticket stub in his palm with the fading numbers above each slot. He measured each row by slowly sliding a finger along the dry wood and counting. The rubbery smell from the sole-material drawer gradually seeped through a gap below the workbench. After three rows he had lined several stray shoes on the floor, their smoky leather scents rising like warm bread. A striped shop cat watched from the price board, tail flicking, but those pairs still lacked his own. His father waited in the doorway chair, reading the faded price board while the shoe-shine footrest cooled under his boots.
A sudden scrape at the doorway cut through the wheel’s hum, and the doorknob rattled under an unseen weight. When Amos turned, a damp-furred terrier nosed inside, carrying a puddle-rich odour that overpowered the smoother scent of polish. The cat sprang to the top of the price board, claws ticking dry wood above the faded numbers. Amos stepped away from the half-sorted pairs to guide the dog back outside before muddy paws touched the glue pot’s warm fringe. The street breeze followed them in vinegar-sharp bursts, tugging loose tickets and rolling them like tiny sails across the floor. By the time Amos coaxed the terrier through the closing door, the bell gave one bright ding and fell silent again.
Back at the cubbyhole wall, the floor breathed an earthy cold where the pairs had shifted during his absence. Unfamiliar smells mingled—sweet wax from an open tin, metallic tang from an overturned tag, and the dog’s lingering wet-fur note. The shoes he had arranged now lay in a haphazard arc, making his earlier counting useless. A swift insight landed beside the scattered shoes: one loosened ticket had been trapped behind a heel. Its paper edge carried dry grey glue powder that shimmered softly under the overhead bulb. He treated each shoe as potential kin to that ticket, lifting and sniffing the leather one by one. A slow, soft flex finally revealed a matching carbon smudge on a brown boot’s lining. Amos guided the reunited pair across the dusty floor and onto the brass footrest that waited beside the doorway chairs. A faint streak of wet paw print curved across the plate, drying into a pale outline against the polished metal.
Translation
