"This tray is crowded."
Stella swept a scatter of pale seeds toward the bench corner, listening to their tiny patter. Paper envelopes rasped against each other as she spread them in a thin layer. Each tiny bead rolled with dry patter across the grainy wood, stopping near a rough groove. Some faded paper labels had been washed blank by last summer’s heavy humidity completely already. She needed twenty basil seeds to finish the narrow planting strip before the gardener outside completed watering. She gently crushed one seed between thumb and forefinger at the center of the spread. A shy scent rose, carried by a faint draft that creaked through the loose window frame. By quick deduction she judged it basil and dropped seven seeds into the first groove. The compartment still echoed like a nearly empty drum when her fingertip tapped the wood.
She tried again, and the second packet rustled open with a dry cascade that bounced against the tin tray. She crushed the fresh sample too early, so the smell lagged behind, and an almost oceanic tang filled the gap. Realising the error, she tipped six seeds back, their tiny shells clicking one by one against the wooden groove. A hollow ring outside marked time as the metal watering can knocked against stone, repeating every few heartbeats. On her third approach she changed only timing; she waited three full breaths after each crush before lifting the seed. During that pause the soft scent thickened, floated upward, and confirmed the basil character with quiet certainty. She gathered eight seeds; the total reached twenty, and the groove responded with a muted thud beneath her nail.
A sudden shift overhead made the rafters creak, and bunches of dried lavender bumped together with muffled knocks. One swollen seed slipped free, skittered across the tabletop, and rolled straight into the freshly completed line. Under the magnifying glass its glossy coat caught the light and glittered like a faraway quasar against the darker grains. She plucked the impostor out and flicked it into a tin saucer where mismatched seeds rattled softly together. A valley breeze slipped beneath the doorway and fluttered loose packets, yet her sorted groove remained full and still. If the packets tipped now, the hard-won order would scatter across the cool stone floor like noisy hail. The tray that had been crowded was now lined with a neat row of basil seeds and a thin sprinkle of husks.
