English Original
A sharp clap echoed against the sheet; Harris’s cardboard rooster already pecked the fabric in a clear silhouette. Cleo halted beside the windowsill, hearing chopstick handles rattle as Harris twirled the stick with a bit of swagger. Afternoon sunlight hummed through the upper glass, and each tap from the rooster sent a hollow echo behind the sheet. The uneven flutter of pinned fabric turned the bird’s outline sharp, then suddenly blurred like chalk rubbed too fast. At the prop table an adult trimmed cardboard; scissors whispered across fibres while new shapes slid into a waiting pile. Cleo lifted her bouquet puppet from the shoebox, its paper petals brushing together with a gritty hiss that resembled dry leaves. She edged forward, placing the bouquet inside the bright lane where Harris worked, ready for the two shadows to mingle.
A passing cloud muffled the light; brightness bounced back a breath later, flinging both silhouettes sideways across the fabric. Cleo’s bouquet slipped off the screen, and the chopstick thunked against the frame with wooden ring. She had already moved closer to the warm glass, and her elbow brushed Harris’s space, muffling his rooster into a shapeless patch. Its crisp edge had been blurred by her sleeve earlier, but now the entire figure vanished beneath a dark smear. The two sticks clicked, a metallic tick that bounced inside the shallow frame before rolling off into silence. If she had swung the stick wider, the puppet would have struck the pane and bent beyond use. Instead, children exhaled, then started to synchronize their rhythm; Cleo dipped her wrist while Harris tilted the bird upward. Two shapes returned to view, fuzzy yet whole, and the echo of their combined motion pulsed like a slow drum.
Minutes later the sun slid lower, and every squeak of cardboard against fabric deepened as shadows stretched thin. A tiny ping travelled through the glass as a pin sprang free; the corner drooped, splitting the screen with a diagonal fold. The adult pressed the pin back, yet looseness remained, leaving a pocket of trembling cloth near the base. Cleo stepped backward, shrinking her bouquet, while Harris advanced, letting the rooster swell enough to cover the new gap. Their solution kept both figures alive, though edges rippled whenever the sheet caught a draft from the window frame. A faint crease curved across the lower fabric where the earlier pin had torn free.
Translation
