English Original
Dawn pressed the brush handle against the palette, and it felt swollen and strangely cushiony where it normally stayed firm. Moisture from earlier washes had soaked the wood, turning every movement into a slippery balancing act between grip and glide. Fine grit tickled her thumb. She swept a wide stroke across the lower, still-gleaming half of the paper; the pigment spread in feathery fingers, darker than the sky band already dry above. The ceramic rinse cup stood an arm’s length away, cloudy water swirling each time she dipped. A cautious approach slowed her wrist, because the drying line crept downward like quiet tide. She hoped to keep the wash even, so she lifted the brush with tidy finesse and shook off a bead of green. The bead landed on a tiny beetle exploring the board’s edge, and the startled insect jerked sideways, its shell clicking faintly against the rough wood.
The beetle’s sudden dash cut across a line of ants marching along the plank. Ants bumped into one another, legs tangling before they broke formation and spilled toward the vase where Grandma arranged stems of white yarrow. One ant scrambled onto a dangling leaf; its twitching drew a small sparrow watching from the porch rail. The bird hopped down, claws gripping the vase rim, but the light pot slid a finger-width and nudged the rinse cup. Pigment-rich water tilted inside, a wave climbing the wall of plastic. Dawn felt the board tremble and slid her free palm beneath the cup just as the first drop left the lip. The splash hit her skin instead of the painting, and the trembling stopped. She placed the steady cup beside the jar of brushes, then laid the damp brush across the palette; a thread of blue crawled from its bristles toward the nearest puddle.
Translation
