The mug tree beside the coffee machine showed five empty pegs, faint dust rings marking where cups once hung. The shelf had been restocked that morning, yet every spare cup now waited in busy hands elsewhere. Paloma shifted the pillowcase of clean tea towels higher on her shoulder and leaned closer to confirm the shortage. She had promised to bring three steaming cups to the meeting room before the afternoon agenda resumed. Nearby, the coffee machine radiated faint warmth, its spherical brew button glowing a drowsy orange. She placed the first mug below the nozzle and let her wrist relax against the counter's cool edge. Thin stains, browned by time, traced crooked lines down the machine's sides like slow maps of earlier breaks. Water trickled steadily, and the familiar hum seemed the very quintessence of late office hours.
Halfway through the pour, the flow thinned to a hesitant drip; the transparent tank behind the boiler showed only a shallow pool. Paloma had counted on enough water for three cups, yet the numbers told a different story. If the reservoir ran dry, the machine would stall and demand a slow refill at the corridor sink. She pivoted the mug away, wiped stray drops with a towel corner, and decided two colleagues would share later. Her plan required a swift transform of expectations rather than another round of corridor trips and patient waiting. She removed two unused mugs, stacked them upside down, and felt her shoulders loosen under the lighter load. A fresh burst of steam curled upward as the single portion finished, the last drop landing without a splash.
Paloma lifted the mug, heat pressing gently through the ceramic onto her palms while faint ozone lingered above the drip tray. Behind her, Felix kept arranging chairs in the meeting room, the scrape of metal feet marking steady progress. She crossed the corridor, careful to balance the spherical surface of liquid so it would not lap over the rim. A slow exhale escaped as she placed the lone mug at Adele’s spot, dark aroma floating above the agenda sheets. Outside the door, the machine’s pump cooled, and its soft ticking faded into the carpet’s muted crackle.
Translation
