The meeting room door stood wide, but the projector screen stayed blank. Maeve, the afternoon intern, waited in the break room corner where the silver coffee machine reflected a blue-grey stripe of window light. Her task looked simple: pour enough water so the machine could start its next cycle. A clear ridge inside the reservoir marked the minimum. At the moment the tank base showed only a thin shining smear. Each paper cup held about one hundred millilitres, while the ridge demanded three. Maeve pressed the plastic dispenser; it released three cups at once, and one slipped free, sailing across the pale counter before stopping at the edge.
She kept hold of two cups and carried the first to the corridor sink, cool water curling inside like quick mercury. The fluid emptied into the tank and lifted the level a fraction; the red standby light ignored the effort. Maeve rolled her wrists for ease, then walked the same path again. The second pour brought the surface two-thirds of the way, yet the light still glowed. Greer passed by, arranging steel-legged chairs for a session next door; carpet muffled each scrape. Maeve reached for the last cup and found its rim crushed. The dispenser’s reluctance earlier had pinched the cardboard, leaving a stiff crease, so she pressed the edge flat, droplets trembling along her fingers while the corridor air drifted chilly and still.
She filled the repaired cup, its paper walls cooling against her thumbs. Back at the machine she angled the reservoir toward her, widening the mouth so the pour slid in softly. Water touched the ridge; the red lamp blinked out and a blue symbol lit, quiet as frost on glass. The narrative of a minor chore had reached its pivot, yet a phone rang behind her and she jerked, spilling a thin ribbon that traced the chrome panel. Despite the splash, the machine began to rumble. Further along the corridor, Greer paused, dabbed the spill with a folded tissue, and then nudged another chair under the oval table.
