The paste bucket near the doorway smelled of plain flour and warm water, but the one beside Ada reeked sour. She knelt on chalk-streaked concrete, aiming to smooth the border where blue and gold tissue panels would meet. A moving breeze carried a menagerie of odors—crushed carnations, metallic wire, damp sawdust, and dusty tissue scraps. Ada dipped the wooden stirrer and met thick strings that clung together and refused to slide from the stick. She had already fabricated one ladle of fresh, runny batch into the bucket, and the blend loosened and released fragrance. Encouraged, she added a second scoop, while the combined paste swirled in bohemian ribbons she could almost savor.

To thin the stubborn clumps, she spritzed water from the nearby mist bottle, and a porridge-like steam lifted upward. The mixture slackened too far, sliding oily against the pail, so she sprinkled in a broad handful of spare flour. Heavy chalk-white knots formed, dragging one edge of the bucket downward until its rim scraped the concrete and flipped over. Paste oozed across the floor, met a forgotten puddle from earlier misting, and the two fluids merged into a milky sheet. The sheet drifted toward the chalk line, threatening to erase colour plans before anyone above the ladders could notice.

Ada lunged, scooped out the largest flour lump she had added moments earlier, and flung the gummy ball into a trash bin. With that weight gone, the bucket steadied, and the remaining paste swirled smoothly instead of rocking against its walls. She slid a stiff cardboard rectangle across the wet floor, propping one edge, so the liquid bent away toward the floor drain. Ripples slowed, broke into lazy drips, and the chalk seam emerged clear between the blue and gold tissue bands. A shed cat, drawn by the floury tang, padded in from the sunlight and wandered along the cardboard ridge, tail flicking downstream.
