"Slide the bucket aside." Glen nudged the paste tub with his boot, revealing the smudged chalk border on the concrete. Jarvis crouched, the chalk stub pinched between two sticky fingers, and tried to revive the line that guided blue from gold. Moisture left by the bucket turned the chalk to paste; each stroke broke into pale crumbs. Overhead, staple guns cracked in quick patterns above the float, echoing from the corrugated roof and across the wooden frame. Their metallic symphony reached a brief crescendo when two workers fixed wire at the same moment. Warm light pouring through the roll-up door cut amber stripes across the floor this afternoon. The beam also caught every dust mote, turning the narrow space into a golden haze. Jarvis shook his hand, chalk dust drifting like dry snow across the damp patch now.
He backed toward the doorway to compare shades already pasted on the float earlier today. Natural daylight showed a problem: the left panels carried a deeper blue than the right ones. Jarvis tried to articulate the mismatch to Glen by holding two tissue scraps together, yet under indoor bulbs they looked identical. If they had kept relying on the fading chalk, the two sides would have drifted even further apart. An idea flickered—use the amber masking tape stored on the supply table near the ladders. Glen fetched the roll and stood in the light zone holding matched scraps while Jarvis unspooled a strip along the chalk path. Their dialogue of nods and hand signals kept the tape straight across the concrete landscape of paste pots, ladders, and scattered petals.
A sudden gust from the open door lifted an unfixed tissue sheet, pressing it against the fresh tape like a bright flag. Instead of peeling it off, Jarvis tore the sheet into neat squares for quick reference later. He pressed them at regular gaps so every worker could see the agreed tone from any angle. Glen smoothed each square with a flat palm, and the line gained both colour and strength. By the time the staple guns quieted, the new border ran unbroken, glowing honey-bright between shifting shadows. A faint citrus and spice scent hovered where they had pressed the tape just moments earlier.
Translation
