English Original

Forty minutes of grass-crackle had carried Rosa and Clyde from the orange flag to the stream bank, where a single heel print sagged in the sticky clay beside the constant glug of water. Overhead, leaves rattled like thin tin, and a distant whistle pierced the canopy in short bursts. Rosa raised the compass; its needle gave one slow lurch, then floated still. The reading disagreed with the faint moss stripe on the nearest trunk, yet both clues sounded equally certain under the layered hush of birds and water. Clyde bent lower; his boot marks began to intertwine with the unknown track, knotting fresh squeaks of mud into the older imprint.

Another whistle—louder—cut through the murmuring stream, and both friends jogged toward the clearing centre to show they were still within sight of the supportive teacher standing on the hillock. During the short dash, the compass clacked against Rosa’s zipper pull. When they reached the post, the adult’s brisk nod allowed them to return. Back at the bank, the heel print had blurred; a trickle from the waterline drummed against it, and tiny bubbles popped where toes had been. Rosa lifted the compass again. The needle drifted thirty degrees away from its earlier bearing, swinging with more tolerance than before. A buried line of greener grass nearby whispered of hidden iron; their earlier spot stood directly above it.

Clyde pressed two fingers to the grass depression, and Rosa tapped the map, counting paces aloud against the stream’s soft drone. They now aimed toward a tilted marker stone tucked under overlapping roots rather than the mossy trunk. At step twelve, both paused: Rosa felt the ground change from spongey clay to firm crunch, and Clyde noticed the birdsong grow clearer as branches thinned overhead. Without words, they split the work—Rosa steadied the rattling map board while Clyde kept the compass away from the buried pipe’s pull. Rosa pressed her finger on the map’s tiny circle while Clyde pointed the compass toward the hillock.

Translation
