Chalk grit pressed against Hazel’s palms while she balanced on the wooden step inside grid square B-4. She had already brushed a thin trench across the grey-white layer, and a faint curved ridge lay exposed. The ridge looked vivid against the pale chalk, like a pencil line drawn underwater. Hoping to see the full outline, she lifted the spray bottle and sent a light mist across the surface. Moisture darkened the chalk, and tiny grains loosened under her brush, revealing two more matching ridges. The pattern now suggested an ancient reef fragment rather than one shell, and her shoulders drew upward. To fix the sight before it dried, she gave the layer a second, heavier spray. Tiny green shoots marked the renewal of plants along the pit edge, brushing her calves each time she shifted.
The extra water softened the surface; Hazel’s trowel sank a centimetre when she tried to widen the trench. She jerked her elbow back, shifted her grasp on the handle, and dabbed at the depression with the soft brush. Slurry oozed along the ridges, blurring their edges, yet she decided a third mist might clear the dust. She pumped the trigger twice; grey paste coated everything, and the once-crisp spiral vanished under a dull skin. The educator’s voice drifted from the rim, reminding everyone to pace work, yet her square kept sliding. Liquid chalk pulled downward, leaving a shallow groove that threatened the fossil’s thin edge. If the mud thickened again, the shape could disappear for good beneath a fresh crust of chalk.
Hazel stopped spraying, planted one knee for balance, and scraped a flat trowel edge under the soggy layer. With one scoop, she lifted the middle band of wet chalk—the paste made by her second spray. The sticky lump slid free, and drier chalk behind it locked the trench walls together. Under the remaining moisture, the three ridges brightened again in vivid contrast to the background. She traced them with the dental pick; realization flashed as the lines connected into a branching coral shape. It was not a single creature—she had uncovered a small section of reef trapped in the chalk bed. She noted the grid number on the clipboard, then eased out of the pit, legs tingling from the crouch. Two paces away, Fraser sifted soil at the table; a tiny tooth glimmered on his mesh, waiting unseen.
Translation
