Cool dew soaked the smooth porch stone under Erik's fingertips, and a faint lemon sting drifted from the empty mason jar beside him. The lawn breathed grassy sugar, while earth near the hose released a dark, mushroom-like tang. Resin from fresh paint carried by Sable, an evening painter mixing colors on the step, added a sharp hint that cut through the jasmine haze. Between tall stems a wavering glow pulsed. At first he thought another firefly floated there, yet each movement thickened the honey smell of crushed petals, as if hidden wings stirred the air. He eased onto damp grass; crickets clicked peppery rhythms, and the glow showed creamy dots like a tiny fawn across folding wings. Night air cooled further, brushing cold moisture along his rolled cuffs.
The porch bulb dimmed, and a clear aim formed: keep the glowing newcomer safe before darkness swallowed it. He lifted the jar, but the lid had been sealed by a ring of sugared rust, and sour citrus odor clung to his nails. First he scraped metal against his cotton sleeve; loosened grains sweetened the breeze, yet the top refused to turn. Shifting weight onto a stepping stone for leverage, he slipped on the slick surface; the glass jolted and nearby fireflies vanished. Choosing firmer ground, Erik knelt in thick, moist grass, pressed the jar against his knee, and both palms finally coaxed a grudging twist. A whiff of fermented lemon escaped, and the light showed its truth: not a firefly at all, but a newly formed butterfly drying after metamorphosis, its spotted wings borrowing glow like wet paint. Erik steadied the first jar where ordinary fireflies blinked, while Sable raised a second jar and the butterfly clung gently to its cool glass.
