English Original
A pale arc covered only half the slate, its chalk tail stopping where Alma had lifted her hand. She lowered the brim of her sun hat and tried aligning the wooden protractor, yet its loose hinge sagged sideways. The chalk mark wavered, so the measured angle slipped by three degrees before she even noticed. She expected the pale line to expand evenly from the gnomon, yet the slip distorted it. Gwen, sitting two paces off with sketch paper, glanced up but kept her pencil moving among the flower shapes.
Alma left the platform to jot the wrong reading in the notebook. The breeze lifted each sheet, scattering pale grains across the ruled columns before the paper settled again. While she waited for the page to stay flat, she helped Gwen shake crumbs from a checkered tablecloth folded beside the paints. Several petals had been trapped beneath the cloth fold and fluttered out once it shook free. An ant tumbled from the cloth, righted itself, and marched over a dapple of sunlight toward the hedges. The tiny creature’s persistence drew a brief tap of knuckles from Alma, a quiet gesture of gratitude for small tutors in patience. Before heading back, she compared two angles on the reference wall and traced the bench’s shadow simply from curiosity. Gwen remained more acquaintance than friend, yet their movements already meshed like gears whenever objects needed holding or dusting.
As Alma stepped beside the slate again, the wind nudged the wooden protractor off the pedestal, bouncing it near Gwen’s paints. Gwen scooped it up, but the hinge had splayed wider; chalk dust clung to the joint like fine sand. Alma pressed a thicker pinch of that dust into the gap, then squeezed the arms together until the brass pivot stiffened. Gwen steadied the gnomon while Alma redrew the arc; this time the chalk glided and the measured angle held steady. An ant dragged a yellow crumb of chalk along the fresh line. The dotted path it left behind glittered against the slate like accidental beads, a cheerful extra marking.
Translation
