Kent bent over the platform, his sun-hat brim shading his nose, while dry mineral scent floated up from fresh chalk dust. Farther back, the brick warehouse of the research facility exhaled a grain-dust aroma that mingled with sunlight. A wooden lodge near the gate breathed warm resin, adding a faint sweetness to the air. Kent tapped the loose protractor hinge; it had already been tightened once with a stubby screw. If the shadow kept sliding, the noon point would drift out of reach, so he lowered the protractor to fix the angle.

The chalk stroke scraped across the slate, releasing a sharp lime-dust flavor that rode the next breeze toward the bench. A resin-scented breeze slid through, lifting a wisp of dust from the slate toward the herbs. A sparrow landed on the rain barrel rim and dipped its beak into a pooling droplet. It flicked the water onto shining leaves, then sprang toward the hedge in a burst of dry wings.
