Green Across the Tarp- 適合中高級的英語短篇故事

The green bucket looked full, but its surface had gone dull and leathery. Dante stepped onto the sun-warmed tarp, the acrylic smell suddenly aromatic where heat lifted vapour from the open paint. A parakeet on Eve’s shoulder twitched its tail while she traced a chalk curve beside him, the bird’s small dish of seed resting nearby as quiet sustenance. Dante stirred with the wooden stick; the leathery skin tore, and a thick flap sank, releasing darker liquid underneath. He dipped his tray, yet the loose skin clogged a corner and left rough clumps. During a brief pause for introspection, he compared the lighter dried band high on the brick with the deeper band still wet below. If he added water now, the shade would shift even more, so he lowered the tray and searched for a solution.

A faded red toolbox waited at the tarp’s edge, its lid propping a square of mesh used for straining paint. Dante had already set the mesh over the tray, but the first pour had been too quick; flakes slipped through. He tried again, holding the bucket slightly higher, letting a thinner ribbon pass. The stream struck the mesh, burst upward, and speckled the tarp. Gravity pulled those specks into one wandering trickle, and the fluid rolled along a crease, toward the open toolbox. Eve gasped when the green line crept over her section’s chalk border. She lifted one corner of the tarp, and Dante wedged a rag underneath, raising the slope so the paint slowed, then stopped against the fold. Tiny droplets continued sliding, yet the main flow curved back on itself and pooled safely away from the tools. Overhead, heat shimmered against the bricks, and colour differences between dry and damp rows grew clearer with every minute.

From her new perch, the parakeet bobbed along Eve’s sleeve, pecking at a sliding fleck of green that kept drifting toward the cuff.

綠色油漆桶看起來還是滿的，但表面已經變得暗啞又帶點硬皮。丹特踩上被太陽烤得發燙的防護帆布，熱氣把壓克力顏料的氣味揚得特別濃郁。站在他旁邊的伊芙用粉筆勾出一道曲線，她肩上的鸚鵡抖動尾羽，小鳥的食碗就放在旁邊，裡頭的種子安靜地提供著養分。丹特用木棒攪動，硬皮被撕開，一大片沉到桶底，下方較深的顏色隨即浮現。他把漆倒進托盤，卻因為脫落的硬皮堵住一角，留下粗糙的顆粒。他短暫停手、細看牆面：上方已乾的顏色較淺，下方仍濕的顏色較深。若現在加水，色差只會更明顯，他放下托盤，開始尋找辦法。

防護帆布邊有個褪色的紅色工具箱，箱蓋撐著一塊用來過濾油漆的網布。丹特先前已把網布放在托盤上，但第一次倒漆太快，碎片還是混了進去。他改變角度，再倒一次，讓細細的漆流通過網布。畫出的細流撞上網布向上濺起，綠點滴落在帆布上，沿著一條折痕向工具箱爬去。當那線綠色越過她區塊的粉筆邊界時，伊芙倒吸一口氣。她抬起帆布一角，丹特把抹布塞在桶底下，讓帆布形成坡度，漆流於是慢了下來，最後停在帆布的摺痕旁。零星小滴仍在滑動，但主流已彎回自己，安全地積在遠離工具的位置。頭頂的磚面持續放熱，乾濕區域之間的色差每分每秒更明顯。

鸚鵡換到伊芙袖子上，隨著手臂前後輕輕點頭，啄向一滴仍在袖口附近緩緩滑動的綠色油漆。
