She opened the logbook on the flexing middle plank and anchored it with a smooth river stone. Openness spread toward every horizon while overhead clouds boiled like a rolling cauldron, a brash metaphor for the unsettled sky.

A honey-lemon elixir hissed from her thermos when uncapped, sending sweet steam that slipped beneath the stone. A sudden gust slapped the platform; pages fluttered, and the stone skated across the damp grain, scraping faintly. Bea crossed a spare pencil over the margin, hoping extra weight would still the sheet. The pencil rolled when another blast arrived, so she flattened a wooden ruler across the top edge. Now pencil, ruler, stone, and thermos crowded the paper; her wrist bumped everything, releasing lemon vapour and dry graphite dust. The markings beneath the smudge turned blurry before she could finish the bearing.

A lighter puff followed; the vane stayed crooked, its squeak fading into the cold air. Bea lifted the ruler away, sliding its chilly edge back into her pocket. Freed of the stiff bar, the paper flexed with the wind instead of buckling, and the stone settled smoothly near the spine. The next gust arrived; the vane jerked east, the flag caught up after a breath, and Bea wrote the fresh angle quickly.
