English Original

“The cylinder wobbles again.”

The clear glass cylinder leaned against its wooden post, amber water shivering under the honey-coloured porch light. Raine crouched beside the post and pressed both palms around the cold glass. The rain had paused, leaving a warm glow sliding across the meniscus inside the tube. She noticed the etched numbers leaned slightly; the post had been tilted by soft soil through many spring showers. Slightly tilting the tube would bring up the reading on one side and drop it on the other. An inquisitive robin hopped onto the bracket, blinking at the shifting water line like a tiny inspector. Raine walked a slow circle, stopped at the downhill side, and fixed her gaze level with the curved surface. She read thirteen millimetres and Felix nodded from the porch where their grandparent sipped tea.

Raine jogged along the stepping-stone path, shoes gripping rough sandstone yet skating over the glossy slate that shone like wet toffee. A light zephyr, warm as baked bread, curved beneath the porch roof and flipped the logbook’s front cover open. The neat pencil columns were being blurred by spreading moisture faster than Raine could slide the pages safe. She had already wiped the window once, yet fog crept back and muffled the view of the cylinder outside. Lifting her dripping sleeve above the paper shielded the graphite. Water rolled from the cuff and transformed tidy digits into grey islands. She grabbed the small stone sphinx from the shelf and pressed it onto the rebellious corner. The heavy base pinned the sheet, yet its sandy surface drew damp deeper, staining a rust rectangle beneath the statue. Accuracy survived, but the page no longer looked neat.

Raine shifted the logbook three boards farther indoors, then traced over the blurred number with a darker, thicker line. If the sky opened again, the bold mark would still shine through any fresh splash. Felix scraped the porch chair nearer, blocking stray drops, while the robin fluttered onto the tree and shook rain like copper pins. Only six sharp pencils lay in the tin where nine had begun the afternoon. Raine tapped the sixth pencil against the logbook spine.

Translation
