"Need the milk jug," Yara said. Luke slid the cereal box aside, its ochre cardboard flap brushing the copper lid of a jam jar and leaving a faint rust smear on his knuckle. Honey light from the window struck the glass jug; droplets on its surface caught the glow and turned iridescent. Yara angled her bowl beneath, while Luke angled his spoon toward the stack of plates beside the toaster. The napkin holder’s wire formed a tight spiral that grazed Luke’s wrist as he reached, and a spoon in the ceramic jar rang against its neighbor. A single flake, curved like a tiny seashell, escaped the tilted box and landed on the dark counter, unnoticed in the morning rush.

The jug felt heavy in Yara’s hand; a clear bead rolled down the glass and pooled under the base. The milk jug had already left a wet ring when she lifted it, and Luke rested his cup where the jug had stood. The hidden moisture softened the grip between cup and counter, so the cup slid toward the plate stack. Luke caught it, but his elbow brushed the napkin holder; the wire frame tipped and nudged the jam cluster. One jar toppled, was being dragged by its own sticky rim toward the counter’s raised lip. At that moment the toaster sprang open with a metallic crack—bread shot up, golden steam spreading a yeasty scent. Yara flinched; a thin arc of milk splashed beyond her bowl, adding a surplus puddle to the confusion.

Luke steadied the jar with his free hand, then shifted his stance so his hip blocked the drifting cup. Yara bent closer, pouring again from a lower angle; milk drummed into her cereal without further escape. She wiped the puddle with two damp napkins, folding them until an amber patch showed no more moisture. Luke waited, then eased the cup onto the now-dry space and filled it with milk in a quiet moment of mechanical triumph, the kettle’s soft hum fading behind them. They exchanged a brief nod before placing the jug back on its spot. The milk jug that had been brimming now showed a pale band below the curved handle.
