Ripples of coloured light already danced across the reflection pond where Colette knelt, rotating her fish-shaped lantern to admire its mirror. Eamon paused beside her; his star frame swayed, and a slim stripe of light was being leaked through a split seam. The small gap was his first hurdle, because full darkness would soon arrive and every leak would dull the lantern’s glow. He had crafted the panels in bright daylight, unaware that thin tissue near the corner would stretch once the inner bulb warmed. The stroll from the craft station had seemed a colourful adventure, yet the small defect threatened to dim it. He lifted a fallen tissue scrap and pressed it across half the slit, trusting the still-tacky paste below.
A silver thread of light remained, so he bent lower to contemplate the gap reflected twice in the moving water. Colette offered a corner torn from her lantern plan, and that second patch narrowed the stripe but still did not seal it. While he balanced the star to reach the seam, a breeze pivoted his dowel, the wooden tip nudging Colette’s handle. Her fish lantern swung outward and tapped a low wire where box lanterns hung, and the nearest box jolted forward. That bump shook a thin branch above the pond, loosening three crisp leaves that spiralled down and brushed the glowing water. As ripples spread, he caught one floating leaf, spread paste on its matt side, and pressed it over the remaining slit. The last glimmer vanished at once, and the star finally glowed as a single, balanced shape.
Colette steadied her handle, and the hanging wire stilled, leaving the suspended boxes swaying only a finger’s width each way. Eamon exhaled, the quiet mediation of paste, tissue, and leaf holding firm beneath the renewed brightness. He had vowed to finish before night, and the deepening dusk proved his timing just. At the same moment, near the craft station, Hugo raised a new round globe, and glitter twirled behind it in the breeze. Far above the pond, a paper star rotated along its wire, the light drifting in a slow circle across the leaves.
Translation
