English Original
“Flip the tongue over,” Kit said. His thumbs pressed the shoe’s lining back, and a thin ridge lifted where old glue had loosened. The buffing station’s wheel spun behind him; its low hum sent a faint vibration through the floorboards and a gentle aspiration pulled polish dust toward the vent near his ankles. Kit had already tested the glue once, yet the bond peeled as soon as he bent the toe. A three-minute deadline hovered in his head, because the fresh layer would turn stiff after that. He brushed a pine heel block from a nearby cubby, spread a careful strip of adhesive, and set one heavy polish tin on top. The structure of the tongue sagged less, but the edge still curled when he flexed the leather.
He fetched a second tin and balanced it beside the first. Warm air rising off the motor softened the glue for a moment, then the curl reappeared like a slow spring. If the weight slipped, new glue would smear across the stitches. Kit glanced toward the doorway; his father still leaned near the faded price board, unaware of the miniature struggle. A sudden clatter came from the wheel as a pebble flew free, an unexpected twist that jolted the stacked tins out of line. Kit steadied them, slid the pine block closer, and added a third object—a brass footrest sample that lay cool and flat against his wrist. The combined mass flattened the tongue; at once the leather lay smooth, embracing change each time he pressed the toe downward. He had been sure the moment would feel bigger, yet only stillness marked the threshold: no curl, no gap, just quiet weight. Kit kept pressing the leather tongue under the stacked tins and block.
Translation
