Seven bright chalk rings curved across the wooden floor of the gazebo; an eighth remained a faint outline, and beside it a fresh muddy footprint glimmered. Gravel under Sara’s trainers crunched in short bursts while each chalk stroke released a dry scrape, echoed by pigeon calls on the roof beams. A refrigerator behind the distant snack kiosk let out a steady drone that dipped whenever traffic hissed beyond the hedge. Several boards had been sanded smooth by countless shoes, so the chalk squealed where the grain rose. Rainwater kept dripping from the gutter, tapping a steady beat and feeding a shallow puddle near the step.
A sharp clang cut through the rhythm as the metal waste-bin lid flipped in a gust, wrappers rattling across the grass. Sara’s sibling Dean darted after them; their father, still under the railing, looked up at the noise, and Sara jogged over the path to help. Shoes slapped wet gravel, wrappers crackled, and pigeons flapped away with a hollow thrum. The litter proved harmless, yet scooping it up felt justifiable after such a racket. The wrappers had been trapped beneath the lid before the wind lifted them, and each one returned with a soft crinkle to Dean’s pocket. The fountain pump then clicked off for its scheduled pause, leaving only the low refrigerator hum floating through the nearly quiet park.
When Sara stepped back into the gazebo, the rings no longer formed neat circles. Drips had run through the chalk, and the muddy print had bled into a splayed flower. She tapped the stub once, heard a dull scrape, and saw the damp grain swallow the colour. With a quick compromise, she placed five pebbles where the missing lines had been; their tiny knocks produced a gentle clack, bringing the hopscotch lane back in rougher form. If she had returned even a minute later, the widening moisture would have erased every outline. By evening, only faint grey shadows marked the rings, and the pebbles stayed quietly in their places on the silent boards.
Translation
