Scritch–scritch skated along the driveway; the white chalk rasped against heated concrete near the vertical dowel. Garner crouched beside the sharp silhouette, squinting while glare from overhead light pooled around his hat brim. Ada waited two steps back, a blue stick held ready at the chalk supply area. Every few minutes the shadow tip crept forward by almost a chalk-width, and his growing arc already curved across the sunlit pavement like the rib of a giant wheel. Garner’s aptitude for tidy geometry showed in the even spacing; each dot connected cleanly before he leaned away. Behind them Sam, their father, followed a leisurely walk around the playground edge, book in hand, never casting a stray silhouette across the work. A box lid clicked as Ada swapped colors, and chalk dust floated, silver in the back-lit air.
A sudden shift in brightness darkened the scene; a passing cloud blurred the shadow into a fuzzy smear. With the reference card lifting at one corner, Garner rested on his heels and waited. When sunlight snapped back, he noticed a faint trepidation running through the dowel—the breeze had nudged the clay base. The dowel had been pushed off vertical by the soft clay earlier than he realized. Garner harbored the thought that the stick now leaned, so he grasped the warm wood, nudged it upright, and pressed the clay rim flatter. The silhouette sharpened; he marked the new tip quickly, but his elbow swept across the earlier curve, smudging three fresh dots into a pale blur. Ada gasped yet stayed silent; the spoiled section broke the once-continuous sweep now shining under the noon glare.
He studied the damage, then lifted a half-worn yellow stick. Rather than erase everything, he thickened the blurred stretch into a broader band, leaving the rest narrow. The compromise left the curve readable though uneven, and the extra pressure flattened the chalk, shortening it further. Light struck the wider stripe differently, making a gentle gleam that distinguished the midday segment from the morning points. Sam paused at the shaded bench again, noting nothing. Garner returned to the dowel for the next advance, dropping the yellow stub beside the box. The white chalk that had scraped crisply at the start now showed a flattened tip, dull under the same fierce glare.
Translation
