The plastic shovel jerked on the sandbox edge when a speckled terrier brushed its paw across the handle—had the dog just stolen Wren’s chance to finish his low sand wall? Dry grains burst upward, leaving a chalk-dry whiff that coated his tongue. Wren aimed to arch damp sand over a narrow trench, yet each lift crumbled; the top layer carried the dusty taste of sun-toasted stone. He drove the blade deeper. Two finger-widths below, cooler sand rose with an earthy smell, as though yesterday’s rainfall still breathed there. He packed a block, but the wall sagged; the terrier’s wagging tail flicked a yeasty puff of fur and knocked an indigo bucket sideways. Wren’s shoulders dipped, then he glanced at the fountain where metal gave off a rusty tang: wetter sand waited, if he could bring it back.
Wren hauled the bucket across the rubber mat. The push-button had been designed for larger hands, and his palm slid on the wet metal that released a faint chlorine sting. He leaned with his elbow; a narrow stream splashed into the bucket, misting a bitter mineral taste over his lips. When he let go, the sudden stop rocked the load. A glass marble escaped, struck a forgotten tennis ball, and rigid contact sent the ball rolling. Water and the gentle slope collaborated to keep the ball moving, pulling a shining ribbon of puddles behind it. The terrier, true to its penchant for anything round, chased after. Each pounce shook damp fur that smelled like wet wool. The ball clipped a swing seat; its chain rattled and sprayed droplets in a brief, torrential sparkle. A bench leg finally blocked the run, muffling the motion with a dull thud. Wren returned, tipped what water remained into the trench, and a fresh clay aroma drifted up while the swing behind him kept swaying in a slow arc toward the afternoon light.
Translation
