Nina jogged along the mooring posts, her boots slapping through shallow puddles that echoed off the quay wall. Rigging wires hummed above, and the hanging scale pinged each time a gust shook its chain. Her older brother Jonas crouched nearby, untangling ropes, while she carried a metal clipboard toward the weighing station. A dull clunk stopped her. A wooden crate—larger than a garden variety fish box—lay squarely on the raised ice-box lid. Each sway made its corners rasp against metal. Nina bent her knees, hooked her fingers under one edge, and pulled. The crate had been assembled with neat craftsmanship, yet its stubborn weight refused to move; the clipboard tapped her elbow when the crate stayed firm.

A sharper blast rattled the scale again, the pan ticking like a tiny bell. Even if the lid dropped, the racing air would fling it back open. Earthy steam drifted from the melting ice, mixing with the diesel tang near the fuel pump corner. She pushed at the crate; only a scratchy scrape answered. Beside her, a loose newspaper page fluttered across a coil of rope, its lead column written by an outspoken critic; the journalist’s name flickered before the sheet tore free with a papery hiss. Weight caused this trouble, yet weight might also press things closed. Nina shifted lower, braced a shoulder against the crate, and rocked it just enough for the lid to swing under. While the hinge murmured, she guided the box forward so its mass rested flat on the now-closed top, sealing everything with a steady thud.

Another gust howled; the lid remained quiet beneath the crate, and the wind, now blocked, left the scale almost still. Cold air hissed briefly through a narrow seam, then faded. Nina copied the new reading onto the clipboard; she had already written three earlier, and her numbers no longer wobbled across the page. Water gurgled against stone below, marking the tide’s slow fall. With the figures safe, she placed the metal clipboard on the granite ledge beside the secured ice box, the board giving a soft ping as her fingers slipped free.
