The trays on the shelf lay dry and waiting, but the potting bench shimmered under an amber stripe of sunlight that caught drifting dust. Pia stood beside it, sliding packets across the honey-colored wood while an adult gardener outside watered beds, the hose drawing slow curves through the neighborhood air. Ink on many envelopes had faded to near-nothing; no narrative survived on their peeling faces, only blotches like autumn leaves pressed flat by time. One thick packet—swollen by months of humidity—landed with a dull thud, its damp paper bending the corner of a sorting tray. She had tried to lift the bundle twice already, yet its unexpected weight kept rolling it back, and mixed seeds scattered into the wrong compartment. If the packet had weighed less, it would have slid away unnoticed.
Owen, tying tomato stakes near the doorway, glanced over but continued his task; the problem remained hers alone. A second resistance appeared when the tilted tray nudged another envelope, tipping a sprinkle of oregano seeds into the basil pile. Decay at the packet edges released a faint pepper note, confusing her nose even more. She reached again, then paused: the swollen basil seeds were round and glossy, almost like miniature temple beads, while the flatter oregano grains hid in shallow grooves of wood. The very moisture that had turned the packet into a hurdle had also enlarged the basil seeds. Bending lower, she adapted her angle and let gravity help; she rocked the bench slightly, and the heavier beads rolled together, separating themselves from the lighter flakes. Moments later two neat mounds formed where one muddle had been. Pia scooped half into a small paper cup, the rough rim brushing her knuckles. Owen stepped in to rinse the emptied tray and stopped when he saw the tidy rows. Pia held the lighter oregano seeds, and Owen balanced the heavier basil seeds in his palm, twin piles glimmering differently under the late amber light.
