English Original
A hollow gurgle rolled through the break room as the coffee machine released its final drop into an empty pot. Marco flexed his fingers, still tingling from carrying folders, and lifted the reservoir lid to check the water line. The plastic float rested low; five millimetres more would engage the green stripe that began the brew. A single paper cup stood beside the sink, so he filled it, arm buzzing with the weight of lukewarm tap water. The splash inside the reservoir climbed, yet the float stayed below the mark. The wooden counter had been built by apprentices whose steady craftsmanship still showed in the snug joints against his hip. A faded coffee ring offered a silent recollection of yesterday’s rush.
He tipped a second cup, wrists tightening to steady the pour, and watery beads slid down the spout onto the counter. The loose stream crept across the varnish like slow syrup and slipped over the edge to the floor tiles. Marco fetched a third measure, the paper softening against his grip while his shoulders rolled to balance its wobble. The instant the cup emptied, the float bobbed upward and a quiet motor hummed through the casing. Freed water struck the floor, slid beneath the lightweight recycling bin, and nudged its front wheel into a slow quarter turn. Marco bent, spine stretching, and wedged a folded napkin against the bin’s base; the fabric soaked up the ribbon and stopped the drift.
Commitment to tidy shared spaces showed in his deliberate pats that left the counter dry again. He placed a clean mug beneath the stream, forearms tingling from the machine’s faint vibration, and dark liquid swirled steadily. Across the room, an office plant rested inside a cracked pot; weekly watering had been nurturing slow but certain growth between its leaves. For many workers the brewing felt like a small vocation between spreadsheets, and fresh aroma drifted toward the corridor. On the floor above, three stacked cups spun inside the cooler’s narrow chute and rattled downward toward Sage’s waiting wrist.
Translation
