English Original
A scatter of white paw prints, a loosened cloth strip, and a dented tin scoop lay across the flour packing table. Dean paused beside the bench while his grandparent checked the sail speed outside; the ground floor trembled in a cool, blue-grey rhythm, and flour dust drifted like pale mist around his knees.
A sleek mill cat nosed along the grain store corner, its pads resilient against the churning vibration. Curious, Dean brushed a sleeve over the table. The raw wood beneath showed a clean slate of fresh powder, yet beneath that, a faint lattice of knife scratches appeared, their lines softened by years of weathering. The marks formed an old measure grid, long hidden; the scoop and prints had simply revealed it.
Wind suddenly surged, gears above clacked faster, and the cloth chute jerked sideways so flour poured beside the almost-full collecting bin. Dean swept the runaway stream back toward the opening, but powder kept sliding over the rim. The empty replacement bin waited under two grain sacks against the curved wall, and the stacked weight resisted every tug. He dropped his shoulders, then tried a different approach: he wedged his boot against the lower sack, rolled it forward using his thigh, and let gravity carry it to the floor with a soft thump. Space clear, he dragged the empty bin across the blue-grey tiles; flecks of dust traced his path like tiny comets. Above, the leather belt slapped in uneven time—a rough adaptation to strong wind—but the mechanism kept grinding. Dean had been warned that the gait of the millstones changed with each gust, so he worked quickly, flour spiraling around his elbows. He slid the brimming bin aside with both hands and was lifting the fresh bin into place.
Translation
