Fine flour clung to Holly’s fingers as she drew the sagging cloth chute closer to the wooden bin, the fabric warm where the stones kept grinding below. A narrow shaft of glare sliced through the high window, turning the drifting dust into bright ribbons that folded over each other. Holly had already tied a fresh strip of linen around the chute’s mouth, hoping its smooth edge would steer the powder straight down. Overhead, shadows from the turning gears flashed across the curved wall, and a small dreamcatcher—its threads woven tight like an elaborate spiderweb—swung beside the tool nook, collecting pale specks. The slow hum grew louder when a gust hit the sails, and the mill’s breath of heated air drifted across her wrists.
The grain now poured faster; hotter flour began to cloud around the chute. A second strip of burlap went on, thicker and rougher, and the glare bouncing off the window dimmed behind the swelling sleeve she had created. Thinking the gap too wide, she added a third band of cloth and pulled it tight. Heat collected inside the bulky layers, and a mystified spiral of steam-like dust curled upward where cool wall met warm fabric. The chute bulged; damp clumps rolled back toward the vat instead of dropping. Even the bronze lever upstairs, carved at the tip into a dolphin shape, shone brighter as it reflected the rising glow from the stones below.
Flour now thumped against the blockage, so Holly gripped the middle burlap band and yanked it free. Warm air escaped at once, and the remaining two layers slackened; powder flowed again in a steady pale ribbon that glimmered under each passing flicker of shadow. She tapped the linen edge once, watching the bin fill without another hitch. At the window ledge, a sparrow shook flour dust from its wings and darted across the strip of sunlight, leaving the bright band swaying in its wake.
Translation
