"The left syrup pump looks completely blank now," Greer remarked across the rising steam cloud. He wiped a foggy streak from the glass partition with his sleeve, clearing a small window. Warm amber light from the menu board glowed across the topping bar where two order slips fluttered near the small fan. The syrup pumps had been arranged in a tidy row, yet steam blurred their ink, turning every label the colour of caramel. Behind the frosted storeroom panel, the supervisor’s silhouette drifted, checking inventory at a low workbench stacked with cup sleeves. Greer’s goal sat in front of him: scoop enough springy pearls for two drinks before they cooled and stiffened. He lifted the ladle, and glossy spheres slid aside in slow waves toward the bright centre. The first scoop—roughly half a cup—fell into the vessel, leaving a neat dugout among the dark clusters.
Lyra stepped closer, her elbow brushing the steel rim of the ice bin while she angled a rinsed cup beneath the ladle. A faint reverie crossed her eyes, but a warm vapour burst against her cheeks and hurried the moment away. Greer dipped again; another half-cup of pearls rose, yet a swirl of bath water followed and spilled over the copper edge. The escaping water met a puddle of melted ice and thinned into a pale amber ribbon. That ribbon drifted along the honey-coloured counter toward the pickup shelf, carrying tiny syrup flecks in its wake. Above them, a paper whirligig hanging from the fan chain spun faster in the draft. Fragments of warm light danced like sparks across the fogged glass partition behind the pumps. Lyra slid a tasting saucer beneath the ribbon, slowing the flow, yet the pearls still sat below the etched serving line. Greer had checked the clock earlier, and nearly ninety seconds had passed since the tea left the hot tap.
Greer bent once more, coaxed the last glossy layer upward, and felt the ladle grow heavier in his grip. Water hissed against the steel bowl as he tipped the dark tumble into Lyra’s waiting cup. At that moment the amber ribbon overflowed the saucer’s rim, sliding toward the straws like a thin creek across copper sand. Lyra pressed a folded napkin along the counter edge, and the cloth absorbed the flow until no gleam remained on the surface. The final pearl slipped from his ladle, leaving the pot bare while bath water shimmered bronze across the bottom. Above them, the tiny whirligig spun in widening circles beside the slowly turning fan chain.
Translation
