The sweet air radiated from the drum, yet the space looked roomy, skewing Otto’s perception of how much it could bear. The growing pile pressed against the glass until the latch refused to meet its slot. Otto pushed again, shoulders knotting, but the door bounced back with a dull thud and the control panel stayed dark. If he had left the mat out, the latch would have met the slot at once. Coins waited in his palm, their metallic tang creeping over his tongue as he breathed through parted lips, but the stubborn drum would not start.

Otto stepped back, drew one slow breath, and gained a sudden insight: overcrowding, not damage, blocked the latch. He tugged out the bundle of kitchen cloths—the first extra he had thrown in—leaving the mat and towels arranged in looser layers. The door closed smoothly, and he fed quarters only when the green light stopped blinking, matching the machine’s rhythm rather than racing it. A mellow cottony heat began to radiate outward, carrying a dusty hint of warmed lint. Otto wiped the stray drops from the floor, draped the damp cloths over the folding table’s edge, and walked toward the plastic chairs. Across the room, another washer drum kept spinning, its muffled thuds continuing in steady time.
