"The bucket moved," Eamon said.
He steadied the metal rim against his knee and felt the cold handle press into his palm. The craft corner smelled of damp newspaper; sheets with fern silhouettes hung from clips above him. Brown leaves opened like small hands on the table, their veins branching out, then growing apart toward the tips. Eamon pressed one leaf onto an ink pad, rocked his weight forward, and let his shoulders loosen when a blurred outline appeared on his paper. The first press looked pale, so he tipped the bucket, letting a thin ribbon of water fall onto the pad. Ink began to disperse through the wetter surface, swirling quietly.
A sudden scuffle broke the rhythm. A grey squirrel shot through the open window, skidded across the sill, and knocked a row of pressed leaves to the floor. Two children near the doorway started to rejoice, clapping at the unplanned visitor. Eamon crouched, lifted the knocked leaves, and eased the window wider so the animal could escape. The squirrel bounded out, its claws scratching wood, and disappeared along an outer beam. Eamon had been away from his station barely thirty seconds, yet the pad had changed; diluted ink spread over every ridge. Where crisp edges had existed, new shapes bled outward like rivers meeting a floodplain.
He placed fresh paper under the dripping frame and decided to keep printing rather than clean the mess. The loose mixture slid under each leaf, outlining unexpected clouds around the familiar shapes. By the time his slot ended, eight sheets carried twin images: sharp leaf cores surrounded by soft halos. Hours later, when staff dimmed the lights for closing, the drying rack stood alone beside stacked chairs, and violet rings clung to the papers like low tide marks against pale sand.
