Damp leaves clung to Harris’s fingers as he steadied his star-shaped lantern beside the reflection pond, the soft tissue skin rustling like thin foil every time the breeze hissed through the grove. He pressed an orchid-coloured scrap against the gap, dabbed it with paste, and the leak shrank to a narrow stripe. The tiny brush scraped inside the paste jar, its bristles already half dry. From the nearby food stall corner, a grill crackled, and the distant speaker sent a slow beat that mingled with quiet child voices at the path junction where new visitors arrived.

A second tissue shred, pale as morning lava, went on next. Paste oozed through the fibres, dripped, and plopped into the pond; circles expanded, nudging a floating corn husk toward a fish-shaped lantern tied to a low branch. The lantern rocked, bells on its fins clinking twice against metal wire, which in turn knocked a row of hanging globes; a chain of dull taps rippled away, softer each time. Fleur’s lantern swung on her wrist, chiming once, and then fell still. Harris tested his own patch: only a pin-sized spark escaped now. If the monsoon-fed breeze grew stronger, the weakened panel would flutter again, so he reached for one last scrap. The jar offered a single sticky thread; he smeared it over the spark and pressed a final square of tissue. The glow became even, and no sound seeped out except the low hum of the LED. He raised the lantern; the moving colours doubled in the pond below while the earlier circles faded. His empty paste pot dangled from two fingers, tapping the wooden dowel in a slow rhythm as the freshly balanced lantern drifted forward on the swelling night air.
