After the Water Drop-

Story Content
English Original
Shallow grooves wrapped a stubby graphite pencil; the wooden edges felt sharp where visitors had shaved the casing. A thin film of dust coated the barrel and threatened to darken any fingertip that brushed it. Joel rubbed the pencil between his fingers, sensing a faint quiver each time the tip tapped the clip-mounted paper. The souvenir stamp station stood a step behind him, and the dated stamp felt heavier than it looked. He pressed the stamp onto the pad. Only a pale outline marked the booklet, as if the surface lay on the verge of dryness. With a cautious second press he tried again, yet the page absorbed nothing new and the oval blurred outward. The pad had been used by dozens of visitors since morning and now offered almost no colour.
Joel glanced toward the information desk; a tour group filled the corridor, backpacks swinging and slowing every stride. The supply drawer that held fresh ink had been locked by the attendant before she walked away. Waiting risked missing the diorama’s next rotation, so he quietly searched for another possible method. He unscrewed the cap of his water bottle and let one careful drop fall to quench the thirsty pad. The drop spread slowly; dark circles began to evolve across the dry fibres and pulled hidden dye to the surface. He rolled the stamp head through the damp patch, turned a clean page, and pressed with measured force. A full emblem appeared, crisp as ever, satisfying both eye and fingertips with its bold concentric rings. He placed the graphite pencil into its tray, a blue-grey streak now running along the grooves he had noticed earlier.
Translation
