Story Content
English Original
Kieran set his booklet on the stamp station and lowered the dated stamp with a straight push.
The pad pressed back with a soft spring, and a strong chemical smell rose around his wrists.
A sparrow on the high window beam shifted its claws at the thud and tucked one wing tighter.
Across the corridor, Lucia sat on the bench with a folded map over her knees.
He pressed the stamp on his page; the mark landed pale, a faint crescent near the corner.
"It stamped light," Kieran said, and he kept the stamp face on the pad for a longer count.
He added one small dab at the pad’s darker edge, keeping his wrist straight and his elbow tucked.
The stamp came up with a glossy rim, and its collar gave a tiny scrape along the pad.
He set it down again with the same straight push, but the edge squeezed ink before the center touched.
The darker arc thickened; the shape turned bold and left a ridge that dragged into the fold.
A bead slipped along the groove of the paper, mixing with the pale ink and widening toward the margin.
The sparrow blinked at the motion; its breast dipped once and rose against the steady, cool air.
"It’s smearing," he said, opening the booklet wider while Halle angled her elbow to keep a small gap.
Near the rope barrier, a committee walked past with clipboards, their footsteps bouncing lightly on the stone.
He slid a scrap card from the tray, touched its edge to the moving bead, and felt ink tug his fingers.
The line bent toward the card, and the page lifted as he propped the corner with a slow, careful slide.
He tried the stamp again with the same straight push, a lighter hold, and a shorter count on the pad.
The new mark stood clearer, though a slim shadow from the earlier crescent stacked just under the rim.
Cool air from the drying shelf brushed his knuckles, and the floor sent a soft echo under his shoes.
He held the booklet open above the shelf, thumb braced at the spine, while the card kept drawing a thin purple thread.
Translation
Kieran
