She had come with a single goal: a quick makeover for the maze markers before her brother Felix arrived. Bees droned above the hedge tops, and somewhere a trimmer drummed, yet the loudest note was the slosh of dye inside the metal pail beside her calf. Warm midday air trapped between the boxwood walls hissed softly, and a thin skin began to tighten over the liquid, making a faint papery crackle. Colette bent, tore the forming layer with the sponge, and a sticky sheen spread across half the ribbon.

A sharp buzz dipped low; Felix’s small terrier, waiting behind her, lunged after the bee with a sudden jingle of tags, yanking the leash from Colette’s wrist. The collar chain scraped over gravel, and the dog’s paws pattered down the narrow passage. Colette chased the racket as it echoed between hedges, caught the animal beside a dead-end salvia bed, then hurried back. The junction felt hotter. Using the broken film as confetti, she pressed the sponge again; every pat released a tiny crackle, and mottled dots formed over the earlier stroke, adding rough texture that gleamed when the bee’s hum passed overhead. To slow more drying, she slid the pail beneath a lavender bush; the shadow cooled the metal and the crackling stopped short. Felix’s footsteps soon creaked through the other corridor, guiding her to finish the speckled stripe. The ribbon that had worn pale an hour earlier now carried bright islands of orange sprinkled across its length. Behind her, the cooled dye rippled inside the shaded pail, sending tiny orange swirls toward its metal rim.
