English Original
Harris lifted a damp cotton strip free from the dipping rack, and the dowel rocked—what had nudged the wood so suddenly? He pushed through the hanging sheets, their cool indigo droplets spotting his sleeves, and clipped the new strip to the rough grain. Below, the vat’s oily surface felt warm against the back of his knuckles as he lowered the cloth with slow, even pressure. A hidden sparrow burst from the clothesline when the cloth touched liquid; the bird’s startled wings drove a tiny gust across the yard. The hanging strips began to sway, and one unfinished piece brushed the wax resist table. Melted wax lines stiffened at the icy touch, cracking just enough for a ribbon of yellow-green dye to seep across the white cotton.
A squeak rose near the drying frames where Lyra, counting shades, dropped a handful of wooden pegs. Harris darted over to stop a frame from toppling, then bent to gather the pegs from the gritty flagstones. By the time he returned, a cloud had cooled the vat’s skin; the strip he had left inside showed a paler centre once lifted. He steadied the clothesline with a spare bamboo rod, limiting its swing, and examined the accidental smear on the resist cloth. The line now resembled a narrow river running between the wax ridges, and the unexpected band pleased him more than the planned pattern ever had. He rinsed the piece in the stream, watching blue-purple clouds spiral around his fingers, and hoped the final colour would speak of quiet victory rather than error. While he carried the cloth toward the drying frames, his eyes stayed on the new design; a single yellow-green drop crept along the rope behind him, edging toward an untouched white square.
Translation
