Bram saw the shift, leaned left, and tried to follow it, yet the beam slid farther, escaping his careful steering.

A faint ping followed—the loosened pin popped free, and a shallow fold ran across the screen, slicing the whale’s outline in half. Nadia’s quiet gasp reached him through the cloth. Bram steadied the puppet, noticed the curved fold, and paused; the sag created a dark ridge that looked exactly like a rolling wave. Instead of forcing the sheet flat, he tilted his wrist and let the whale dive beneath the crease, then rise again on the brighter side. The fold that had spoiled the picture now carried the action, and the audience side stayed silent except for a soft laugh. Clouds drifted past, dimming and brightening the stage, yet the improvised wave kept the rhythm alive. When the sun slipped too far, Bram lowered the stick and returned to the pin-adjustment corner. The pin that had been loose now pressed tight against the blue-grey frame, holding the new curve in place.
