English Original
Warm grit pressed against Zara's fingers as she lifted a speckled slab from the gravel margin. Its outline curved like a tiny guitar body, and two quartz spots on one face stared up like owl eyes. She had gathered it hoping the wide belly would lie flat, yet the moment she eased her grip the slab tilted. Weight shifted, the cairn shivered, then three layers slithered apart and rattled down the path, leaving the base alone. Vera, still crouched nearby to tighten her boot laces on a rock, glanced over as Zara steadied herself in the dust.
Zara rose, toes flexing inside her shoes, and jogged uphill toward the slope-face outcrop where flatter candidates often hid. One rounded stone slipped from her grasp and began rolling; she broke into a sprint, shoes skidding, until her palm stopped it. Back at the flat sorting boulder, she lined five shapes in a row, tapping edges to gauge wobble against her wrist bones. She stacked two of them as a low pillow fort around the base, adding weight that hugged the first layers against gravity. If the wind rose now, each stone would test its place. Each movement might create a masterpiece someday, yet for now she focused on how surfaces scraped, slid, and finally quieted. Cloud shadow briefly dimmed the rust-red marker she had set aside, so she traced its ridge by touch until sunlight returned.
While nudging a flattish grey capstone into place, her elbow brushed a half-buried shape beside the scrub hedge gap. The speckled slab had been tossed there by the earlier collapse and now rocked gently in the loose soil. Without pausing to plan, she slid her thumb under its thinner edge, spun it a quarter turn, and lowered it onto the waiting surface. This time the grain aligned, weight distributed, and the growing column stood taller than her knee without a single tremor. Along the ridge, an owl lifted from a cracked stump and skimmed above the sunny path before dipping behind the bend.
Translation
