For a breath they hovered almost level, and their perception of stillness sharpened; then the sun slipped past the fulcrum’s shadow. Heat ran along Griffon’s handle, turning the steel harsh. Instinctively he loosened his grip, his torso shifting backward. The sudden change lifted Margot again and revealed something new: the scrape in the dirt lay directly beneath the midpoint, showing the board itself had been grinding there because the pivot sat a little off-centre. Griffon tucked his backpack behind him as a counterweight while Margot scooted another handspan outward. Wood, metal, and rubber aligned; the plank floated parallel with the ground, silent but trembling. If the handle cooled, they would stay hovering for hours. Margot pressed her shoe into the earlier scuff, deepening the groove into a neat, straight ridge.
