He fetched a second bucket and poured; the basin brimmed, yet sediment still whirled. Wanting perfect clarity, Ira shoveled an extra scoop of damp salt into the frothy swirl. The level rose to the lip, then a ribbon of brine slid over, trickling down the side and along a hairline groove in the clay. The stream crossed a marching band of ants; touched by the cool splash, they broke rank and rushed outward. Their burst of motion startled a small lizard sunning on a loose board; with an instinctive lunge it snapped up a forgotten dried sardine beside Vivian’s pencil tin. The tin toppled, pencils rolled, and one slim rod nudged the leg of a drying frame, making the wooden slats wobble.

Cloudy water kept spilling until Ira noticed the wobble and traced it back to his overfilled basin. He plunged both hands into the mixture, lifted out the last scoop he had added, and tossed it into a waiting basket. At once the surface dropped, the overflow thinned, and the chain of little disturbances eased; the drying frame steadied while the lizard darted away with its prize. If he had stopped at one rinse, the basin would have stayed tidy, yet the quick subtraction rescued the batch without waste. Ira drained the rinsed crystals through a sieve and spread them thin on a frame, grains sliding with a soft hiss. Several ants regrouped beside the shrinking puddle and carried a cottony grain toward a crack in the clay, legs flickering fast across the warm ground.
