Rhea’s sleeves, already soaked from ten earlier trips, had brushed the basin’s rim again as she plunged the big yellow sponge beneath the warm suds. The sponge swelled against her palm; water pressed outward until her knuckles tingled. Crossing the drip path, her elbow tapped the plastic chair and scattered drops onto the dull tabletop. A clear boundary marked where she had worked before—bright plastic on one side, chalky film on the other. She pressed the sponge flat, fingers starting to contort; a gritty rasp had been produced each time the scouring pad skimmed a corner, yet the noise faded under thicker foam. She lifted once more, but pale streaks returned as the liquid cooled, and the rinse bucket beside her shrank inward like a tiny cliff of losing heat.
She tried speed first, slapping water faster than it could chill; if the water cooled further, the soap would cling even tighter. Each hard squeeze sent waves back into the basin, and the foam layer thickened, nudging a rubber meerkat that weighted a rag on the staging edge. The figurine toppled, the splash rode over the lip, and the cardboard under the reserve sponges began to warp. Droplets condensed on the cooler bucket wall and slipped down, clouding the rinse until every swipe left fresh residue. “Almost done over here,” Rhea said, though her shoulders sagged. She switched tactics: the denser kitchen sponge, cooler by design, entered the rinse late, releasing a slow, directed trickle. Fewer bubbles formed, so the cascade softened. She slid a tray beneath the staging area, raising the cardboard clear of new splashes. The earlier flood soaked a dusty hollow beside the bench; wet grit settled, hardening into a smooth patch that stopped the serving cart from wobbling. A thin rivulet glided between paving stones toward the drain.
Translation
