English Original
A satchel stitched with faded canvas, a long-handled rake, and a grease tin glimmered under the mid-morning glare beside the knee-high dam. Oona, rubber boots flashing with water reflections, braced both palms on the nearest sluice board. The sunlit surface of the plank dazzled her eyes, yet the swollen wood refused to slide. Water pressed against the shadow-edged groove, hissed around her fingers, then slipped past toward the wheel. Once more she leaned forward, timing her push with the wheel’s slow clap. The board stayed firmly wedged; only a dull creak answered her effort. Behind her, the graceful spray from each paddle threw moving bands of brightness across the stone.
Oona stepped away, letting the channel decide its own path for the moment. At the wheel station she lifted the rake and scraped dim clusters of leaves from between paddles. Several fragments had been trapped nearby and slightly darkened the water’s glow. A sudden flutter cut across the bright glare overhead above the channel. A graceful butterfly looped through the shimmering spray, its wings catching sharp shafts of light before disappearing toward the garden. On the patch border, villagers had left a small flower bouquet, a cultural tradition marking the planting week. Droplets now winked on its petals under the late-morning glare cast down. While rinsing the rake, Oona noticed a faint spiral shape in the flow beyond the fork. She kept dragging debris toward the bucket until the stick beside the axle wobbled more freely.
When the bucket brimmed, she carried it upstream along the narrow shadowed path. The stream had brightened, and the earlier spiral tugged harder near the sluice. One floating leaf bumped the board, then drifted back; its pause showed a lull in pressure. Oona set the bucket on the grassy edge, placed both hands on the sun-warm plank, and waited through two slow wheel shadows. At the next quiet beat she drove the board downward with steady force. The groove accepted it with a muted slide, and water leapt toward the wheel. The indicator stick swayed wider, and a slim wet line marked the stone where excess water now hurried toward the garden.
Translation
